For more than 35 years The Enid have kept the true essence of progressive rock alive and well and show no sign of giving up as they head out of the road once again, with a gig at The Brook in Portswood tonight. Formed in 1975, the band quickly found a fan base that it has kept to this day. Despite forming at the height of the punk movement, their mix of sophisticated music with progressive overtones found favour with a young audience looking for an alternative to the bin liners and safety pin brigade. "We appealed to a different type of audience, people who wanted a bit more substance to their music, children from middle-class homes, with aspirations to go to university; we weren’t out of step as some people would think,” says keyboard player, composer and founding member Robert John Godfrey. The bands fan base is something that Robert acknowledges as a vital part in The Enid’s career.
