Twilight "Day and Night" (1975/2011)

Германская группа, записавшая альбом в Лондоне, но так и не удосужившаяся увидеть его изданным. Подражали Pink Floyd. Альбом вышел только в наши дни.

Recorded in 1975 in London’s posh Decibel studios, the tracks were initially intended for LP release on the New Blood label. Yet, after all, they remained unreleased. Title track sounds like Pink Floyd.
These music students from the city of Bonn made forays into various musical styles. Listening to tracks as diverse as the title track, which is a psychedelic masterpiece in the Pink Floyd vein, the heavy "Rock ’n’ roll chillun", the blues "Stranger in your town" or the slightly shallow "Last night in Verona" you realize they really know their job. The tracks were recorded in 1975 in the posh London Decibel studios and planned for release on LP but nothing came of it. Twilight’s only releases were two singles on New Blood. The label’s documents, which had been acquired by a collector, were the starting point for tracking down the band as well as the master tape, which they have carefully kept safe until today. By the way, after leaving Twilight, guitarist and singer Volkmar Kramarz joined Arktis and later took over a WDR radio programme.

An "also ran" of minor merit in our opinions. Twilight were a heavy and melodic prog band, typical of the era, comparable to Harlis or Bullfrog (both on the Sky label), with leanings towards hard-rock and some Hendrixy edges. Although they recorded an LP in 1975, which was submitted to Sky for possible release but turned down, DAY AND NIGHT didn't see the light of day until 2000 on CD.

Twilight were a 70s German rock quartet with progressive tendencies, hailing from Bonn. Their sole album’s cover is graced with a beautiful fantasy-themed artwork.

Aside from the rather progressive title track; the band’s sound is in the same vein with classic Thin Lizzy or Lynyrd Skynyrd. But the climate fluctuates with forays into various musical styles.

The title track begins with atmospherics – strumming guitar and the sound of wind. Keyboards and drums come into the mix, keyboards taking the lead before Kramatz’s guitar comes in. Unlike elsewhere on the album, Kramarz’s playing is clean, soaring. Huder’s keys are light, like falling rain.

“Country Waltz” is a damn catchy 70s southern rock. Following “Leaving In The Morning” evoke a lower register sound, harking Supertramp. “Rock ‘N’ Roll Chillun” starts with a few bars are Zep-like, but the whole grove has a Priest taste mixed in with a dash of Kiss and a sprinkle of Mountain. Not for any extended riffs or anything, like they piecemealed a track together stealing bits and pieces… but the fuzzed guitar tone and chorus. “Stranger In Your Town” begins with some narrative intro that ends with announcing the song, eventually turning up to be a blues-rock song.

Line-up:
- Volkmar Kramatz / guitar, vocals
- Ulrich Hulder / keyboards
- Jurgen Bieler / bass, vocals
- Roland Glasser / drums
