New members help legendary prog-rock band Yes maintain familiar sound
For Yes guitarist Steve Howe, it’s "always been about finding people who want to do exactly the same thing” when it comes to touring and recording. These days, that means hitting the road without veteran singer Jon Anderson and keyboard phenom Rick Wakeman, who apparently "thought they had better things to do,” Howe said in a recent telephone interview. "We found that a little bit frustrating. We’ve always been a very hardworking band,” the legendary prog-rock band’s lead guitarist said. "It’s got a lot to do with commitment. We didn’t want Jon to leave, and we didn’t want Rick to leave, but basically, they didn’t want to be part of the party.” Instead, the group with 40-plus years under its belt has sauntered on with a pair of stellar replacements: Canadian singer Benoit David and Wakeman’s keyboard-playing son, Oliver. They join Howe, founding member/bassist Chris Squire and longtime drummer Alan White.
