Rare tape of Beatles press conference set for auction

Запись была сделана канадским фотографом Полом Хуриганом (Paul Hourigan), когда он работал репортером в газете The Spectator. Сразу после пресс-конференции он рассчитывал выручить за нее 50 долларов, однако ни одна из радиостанций не согласилась выплатить ему эту сумму.
В результате он так и не продал запись, и долгое время кассета с записью хранилась дома у Хуригана. В 2008 году, когда фотограф узнал о том, что записанный на концерте The Beatles бутлег был куплен за 30 тысяч долларов, он начал искать старую кассету, в итоге обнаружив ее в коробке из-под сигар.
В описании лота на сайте аукциона указано, что эта запись считается единственной сохранившейся с той пресс-конференции. Пресс-конференция состоялась 17 августа 1966 года в гостинице King Edward Hotel.
Торги пройдут в Лос-Анджелесе 13 июня. Помимо самой кассеты лот включает в себя две катушки, на которые была скопирована запись, и два CD-диска.

After 44 years in a near-forgotten cigar box, a tape recording of a press conference by the Beatles in Toronto goes on the auction block next month.
Retired Hamilton Spectator photographer Paul Hourigan made the tape when he was a freelance reporter before joining the paper. In 1966 he hoped to get $50 for it, but neither The Spectator nor any of Hamilton's radio stations was interested. Today the auction house is listing the one-of-a-kind piece for as much as $25,000.
Hourigan said he went hunting through his house in 2008 for the reel-to-reel tape after reading an item about someone selling a bootleg tape of a Beatles concert for $30,000.
"That was mostly girls screaming, with every now and then a sound from the Beatles. This has each of them speaking in a clear voice," he said.
The catalogue for the auction, by London-based Bonhams, describes the 14-minute tape as: "Recorded that day by the current owner ... these tapes are believed to be the only audio known to survive from that press conference, though written transcripts of the event have always been available as countless reporters were there."
During the short interview session, reporters focus on John Lennon's controversial remark about the Beatles being more popular than Jesus Christ, in addition to Vietnam and the generation gap.
The sale, scheduled for June 13 in Los Angeles, includes two large reels and two CDs of the content made by Hamilton's Grant Avenue Studios, which also did the research that concluded the tapes are extremely rare.
